The Spirit of God

Have you ever tried explaining your growth in Christ, but only receive blank stares in return? “Um…what do you mean you know God in a new a way you never even thought existed? I’m lost…” Have you ever been growing in God so much that He reveals things you had never even considered before? Never even thought possible? Never even knew existed? Lately I’ve had this feeling…this feeling that God is like a huge mansion with all of these doors just waiting to be explored, that God is just waiting for us to enter, question, experience. I’ve just felt that maybe I’m just inside this mansion..maybe I dont even know how many doors exist. I just feel like I’ve never known God in this way before..I’ve never experienced God in this way…this way I have this summer. Yet, whenever I try to explain it to someone…its hard to actually explain. It was at that point that God revealed a scripture to me that I had never even known before. Darren (our college pastor) spoke about it in a devotion a few weeks ago. This is the scripture:

1 Corinthians 2:6-16: Wisdom From the Spirit

6 We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. 7 No, we speak of God’s secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. 8 None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 However, as it is written:
 “No eye has seen,
      no ear has heard,
   no mind has conceived
what God has prepared for those who love him”

10 but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit.
The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. 14 The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man’s judgment:
16 “For who has known the mind of the Lord
      that he may instruct him?”
But we have the mind of Christ.

Then he went on to explain this mystery of God in a way that put words to my thoughts and feelings. Think back to a time where you’ve seen a documentary on the Titanic…or if you’ve seen the movie Titanic, think about the ending, where the scientists are exploring the actual sunken ship itself. If you havent seen one of these, just think about a documentary about the deep seas. In these films, scientists use small robotic submarines to explore uncharted territories, in order to find out things about the sunken ship or the vast, deep ocean. These submarines go to the depths of the vast, unending ocean and come back with information that the scientists have never had before…possibly never even knew existed. This is what the Holy Spirit does for Christians, as we begin to lose ourselves and surrender to God entirely. He begins to reveal Himself in ways we can never even imagine. The Holy Spirit goes into the deep vastness of God, a God bigger and wider than the east is from the west, a God that always was and always is and always will be, a God larger than eternity….and the Spirit of God comes back to us revealing parts of God that we’ve never even known about…parts of God we never even knew existed…parts of God that possibly no man has ever conceived on this side of heaven. This is the wisdom of the Spirit…the mystery of God that I’ve struggled for so long to describe. This is the language of the Spirit that is spoken of in this passage of 1 Corinthians…we speak a language not of this world or of these powers..but of something beyond us, WAY beyond us. A message that God has hidden, but chooses to reveal to us. Like it says…if people knew these pieces of wisdom that the Spirit reveals, they would not have crucified Christ! (But remember, we are all guilty of crucifying Christ with our daily, worldly actions…how much more wisdom does the Spirit want to reveal to us?) We do not know God through the mere minds of man, We know God through spiritual truths..those that the Spirit has revealed to us. Those that are not in the Spirit do not understand what we speak of. How do we discern right from wrong, how do we comprehend an ounce of God, how do we become shaped in the image of God? Not through the ways or thoughts of man. No, WE have the MINDS OF CHRIST. Now that’s an incredible truth all on its own. I’ve never really understood the purpose of the Spirit until now…until I read this passage. The Spirit searches the deep of God…who can know the mind of God without knowing the Spirit of God? My mind can’t even grasp this concept. How wide, how deep, how high is God? It will take us an eternity, and we still wont know all of God. It brings me to a speechless awe. I only dare to express my longing to know more of Him.
