For those of you who have seen the tv series called LOST, you know how intruiging and addicting it is. Here’s two things that I got from it tonight while watching a few episodes of season 2.
In the third episode of season 2, Locke and Jack are arguing about the entire scheme of the island. Is it reality or is it a false illusion? Here’s a few lines of their dialogue that got me…
Locke: why do you find it so hard to believe?
Jack: why do you find it so easy?
Locke: its never been easy.
These three lines really struck me. I imagined a believer and non believer sitting in starbucks over coffee, talking about the reality of Christ, his love for us, his sacrifice for us, his plan for us. When tapped into this reality, the believer thingks “why do you find this so hard to believe?” The non-believer says “why do you find it so easy?” In which the believer responds “its never been easy.” I think thats where I am. At times God is so real and so present, it seems as if He is almost tangibly walking with us day to day. His fingerprints are on everything. But there are also those times when you phase out and you think “what is reality? Is this world reality and this God thing is a scam? Or is God the reality and this world a scam? Whats the purpose of this world if God sees our actions and reactions, and knows where we will eventually be. Not assigning us that place, but simply knowing where our final destination is because He knows what we’ll place our faith in. And if there is a reason for this world and why were are living it, then why do bad things happen to good people? And how can it be fair that there are innocent children in Africa who are near death because they dont eat for days, yet there are people who are filthy rich who refuse to believe there is a higher power other than themselves. No, im not giving anyone a stereotype, but its just a confusion that I have. And if indeed God is real, and He knows that my heart desires to be with Him, and I know that i desire to be with Him, why does the “other me” rear is ugly head? Why does the enemy stick landmines in my path? He wants to destroy me? But why does he want such a big army when the final chapter has been written? God wins. The end. So why does it matter how many people satan has, because in the end, he loses anyways. And what about the way that Jesus flips the ways of society upside down? The last will be first, the first will be last. Love your enemies, do good to those who persecute you. These things defy the laws of humanity as we know it. So i agree with both the believer and the non-believer. Why is it so hard to believe..God created the universe and loves you with everything He has. Why is it so easy to believe there is more than this world has to offer, when i cant see it or touch it, and if its true, then why does all of this happen, and if Christ is who you say he is, why does he reverse all the laws of humanity that i know? Yes, i do agree with Locke… its never been easy. Yet, faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Its not easy to believe, but I do. I never will have all the answers, and of course there will be doubts, but He will be faithful to those who remain tapped into the true reality of who He is.
This brings me to the next thing about LOST that has kept me encouraged. I love this TV series because it is so intruiging. Its a mystery. Its one clue after another, its one demention leading into the next. You never know what you’re going to find out next. One world under another world connected to another world..so many dimentions, so many connections, the puzzle keeps growing as you figure it out. Maybe thats why I love the Bible so much. In my mind, God is similar to LOST. In God, I tap into true reality. When God finally reveals whats behind door number one, I realize that there are 50 others behind it. What i mean is this..you finally grasp one concept of God…lets say “God is love.” When you finally grasp that huge concept, and might think you’ve got it down…God will say “I am love, but what is love? what is your definition of love, what is my definition? What are the actions of love? How have I shown those actions? How many different forms of love are there? To love cake and love your husband are two different things..but both love…how and why is this possible? God so loved the world that he gave his only Son. Why did He give his son? because he loved the world. easy answer. But why did He love the world? What does he get in return? Why does he choose to love? What did we do to deserve it? And does he love those that deny he exists or those who hurt innocent children or those who mislead the lives he created for good? The more answers I find, the more questions I have. Rob Bell says thats the thing about truth…it meets you where you are. Thats why its living. Someone who has never opened the Word can get something from it, and someone who is standing in Israel, surrounded by an archeologist and geneologist and is studying the lineage of Christ can open the Word and can find something new in it as well. Never ending, always learning, always a new angle, dimension upon dimension upon dimension of truth.
Ephesians 3:17-19 “And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”
1 Corinthians 2:10″…but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.”
